Jewellery, empowerment and confidence
Welcome to my very first blog! I thought long and hard when I set about brainstorming ideas of topics to write about, and deciding on the connection between jewellery, empowerment and confidence seemed perfect. After all, it’s what Sassy Rocks is all about right?!
Wearing jewellery as ornaments for personal adornment goes way back several millenniums in history, and I don’t think an exact date can even be put on it. Various cultures over the years have worn different pieces and styles of jewellery to symbolise messages such as status, spirituality, and prosperity. Historically, jewellery has also been worn for wellbeing reasons, to provide good fortune and protect from misfortune and ill health.
Let’s move on into the present day and look at why we wear jewellery now. Well for a lot of the same reasons really but also because of how it makes us feel when worn. But how does wearing jewellery have an impact on the way we look and feel? Can it really help invoke a sense of empowerment for us as women? From my own experience and speaking with others, it absolutely can and let me explain the how and why in a bit more detail.
Jewellery is a channel for self-expression
The jewellery we choose to wear reflects our personality and expresses who we are as a person. Whether it’s a delicate ring, a bold necklace, or cute earrings, these can be an extension of our inner selves and reveal a hint of our characters.
I worked in a job where a uniform policy was brought in after years of staff wearing their own clothes to work and it did what it was intended to do – it created conformity and we all looked the same. This left many of my colleagues (me included) feeling uncomfortable because we were not able to express ourselves through our clothing. To counter this and retain some feeling of our unique selves, many of us wore jewellery and embellishments as a way to exhibit our personas. The accessories were diverse, a subtle pair of earrings, a meaningful bangle, and for one I recall a pin badge for a charity they supported in order to convey their beliefs.
Wearing jewellery for self-expression enables us to feel to ourselves, which in turn generates a feeling of confidence. It has a positive impact on the wearer as it makes us feel happy to reflect our identity, not just on the inside but also on the outside as well.
Jewellery can have sentimental value
Jewellery can hold emotional value, regardless of the price tag of the item itself. For example, when someone close to you has gifted an item of jewellery to you, it can have a real sentimental association with the relationship you have with the person that gave it. Wearing the jewellery piece, just seeing it even, can help recall loving memories and provide comfort to the wearer.
Or it could be a jewellery piece you bought for yourself when you hit an achievement, like getting your first job. This can hold a special place in your heart because when you wear that jewellery, it will always remind you of that accomplishment.
Jewellery provides a feel good factor
Jewellery has the potential to change the way we see ourselves and feel empowered. It’s similar to picking an outfit for a special occasion, like an interview, date, or night out. The clothes you select will be those that will not only look good but also make you feel good when worn and impact your emotional state. Just think about the last time you wore something that made you feel absolutely fierce and you will know exactly what I mean!
Precisely the same feelings are generated when accessorising with jewellery. An amazing feeling of confidence along with happiness and empowerment. Simply having jewellery pieces in our visual field, a reflection in the mirror or knowing that you are wearing them, can give an extra boost of confidence. It can invoke a feeling that can brighten up your mood as soon as you put it on.
Selecting jewellery to wear
If you want jewellery that will generate confidence then it has to match your own style and personality. Pick something you are naturally drawn to, are comfortable wearing and brings you happiness.
A jewellery item with an emotional or meaningful attachment is much more likely to make you feel positive than one that doesn’t. Select jewellery for your own enjoyment that will lift your energy when you wear it. It doesn’t matter if it’s a ring, necklace, silver or gold. As long as it makes you feel good it can put you in the right energy and mindset for the day ahead you.
